Curriculum Information:
ELA (English/ Language Arts):
The first few weeks of school we will be focusing on writing our names, using uppercase for the first letter only and the rest will be written lowercase. We will also be talking about the difference between letters, numbers and words.
High Frequency Words:
The children will learn high frequency words throughout the year. They will bring home these words to practice.
We will learn one color word per week. The first three weeks will be red, orange & yellow.
Fundations:
Fundations is our phonics program that we use. It is systematic in its approach, with the first 12 weeks being introduced to the letters and sounds. We will also practice the correct letter formation. During the month of August and September, we will focus on learning and practicing our routines and the letters Mm , Tt, Aa & Ss. Please review the information that was sent home about our Fundations program.
Math:
We will begin Unit 1, Numbers to Five and Ten. The skills we will work on for this unit are:
The children will have daily Number Corner lessons, which will expose them to the calendar, observe patterns and make predictions, and counting and computation activities focused on the five frame, ten frame and number line.
Throughout the course of the year, children will be assessed on counting skills to 100. This is known as the "100 Club." The children will need to count to 100 by 1's, 10's, 1's by any given number (example - start at 53 and count to 100) and 10's by any given number (start at 50 and count to 100.) Once you feel that your child is ready, please let me know and I will assess them.
Writing:
For the beginning of the school year, much of our writing is focused on your child's name. Please have them practice writing their name with an uppercase letter at the beginning only, and then the remainder using lowercase letters. We will also be focusing on using the correct pencil grip. Forming letters and numbers correctly requires practice and students often need individualized instruction. I appreciate your support at home!
